What is Counting?

Counting is finding out the total quantity of items in a group. Whenever we want to know 'how many' toys we have or 'how many' apples are on the table, we count! To count correctly, we point to each object one by one and assign a number to it in a fixed order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. This ensures that every item is counted once and only once. Learning these fundamental numbers from 1 to 9 is the primary building block for all of mathematics.

Numbers and Their Names

1 (One)

The number that represents a single object, like one shining Sun.

2 (Two)

The number that comes after one, like two eyes on your face.

3 (Three)

The number after two, like the three wheels on a tricycle.

4 (Four)

The number after three, like the four legs of a chair.

5 (Five)

The number after four, like the five fingers on one hand.

6 (Six)

The number after five, like the six legs of an insect.

7 (Seven)

How to Count Objects Correctly

1. Step 1: Point and Touch — Touch the first object in the group with your finger so you don't miss any item.
2. Step 2: Say the Numbers in Order — Call out 'One' for the first item, 'Two' for the second, and keep going sequentially.
3. Step 3: State the Final Count — The last number you say is the total amount of items in that group.

Exam Tips & Common Counting Mistakes

1. Don't skip numbers: Always count in order (1, 2, 3...) rather than skipping to other numbers.
2. Double counting: Make sure you don't count the same item twice. A good tip is to tick or cross out the picture of the item on your worksheet once you count it!
