Chapter Study Guide & Summary

Discover the fascinating world of microorganisms that exist all around us but remain invisible to the naked eye. This Class 8 Science Chapter 2 notes guide covers everything you need to know about microbes, their types, their friendly roles in our daily life, and how some of them act as pathogens causing diseases.

Microorganisms, or microbes, are microscopic organisms that cannot be seen with the naked eye. They are found in almost all kinds of environments, ranging from ice-cold climates to hot springs, and deserts to marshy lands. They are also present inside the bodies of animals, including humans. While some microorganisms exist as single cells (like bacteria, some algae, and protozoa), others are multicellular (such as many fungi and algae).

Microorganisms are broadly classified into four major groups: Bacteria, Fungi, Protozoa, and some Algae. Viruses are also microscopic but are different from other microorganisms because they reproduce only inside the cells of the host organism, which may be a bacterium, plant, or animal. Understanding these classifications is crucial for Class 8 Science students as they form the foundation of biology.

Not all microbes are harmful; in fact, many play a vital role in our lives. Friendly microorganisms are used in the preparation of curd, bread, and cake. They are also used in cleaning up the environment (like decomposing organic waste), in agriculture to increase soil fertility by fixing nitrogen, and in medicine for producing antibiotics and vaccines.

On the other hand, some microorganisms are harmful and cause diseases in humans, plants, and animals. These disease-causing microbes are called pathogens. Common diseases like tuberculosis, cholera, and typhoid are caused by bacteria, while malaria is caused by a protozoan (Plasmodium). Viruses cause influenza, chickenpox, polio, and COVID-19. Food preservation techniques like pasteurisation, salting, oiling, and chemical preservatives help prevent the growth of these harmful microbes.
